Justice Alito was spot on saying that Roe vs. Wade was "egregiously decided".
When I watched the documentary film 40, someone from the Atheist for Life group stated that Roe vs. Wade was complete legal garbage. Based on what I know of that decision, I would agree with that assessment. I think it was a stretch to claim that there's a Constitutional right to abortion.
It was also unfortunate that the decision hampered efforts to protect unborn life, particularly at the state level, as people kept claiming the precedent of Roe vs. Wade to shut down the debate.
Now that Dobbs vs. Jackson has overturned that decision, this discussion can go back to where it should happen, closer to the people, at the state level, since it's a matter of life and death for unborn babies who have no ability to defend themselves.
We can also continue the debate with the discussion that will help change hearts and minds, the more important part of making abortion not just illegal, but unthinkable.
We can commit ourselves to showing the dignity of the unborn, which is powerfully on display in ultrasound images. Those images demonstrate how science has advanced in such a sophisticated way to show the unborn baby is truly a person, a point alluded to in the Roe vs. Wade decision. I've also heard that for a woman in a pregnancy crisis, seeing that ultrasound image makes a huge difference for them, leading them to choose life for their baby.
I'm glad that the Knights of Columbus has sponsored an initiative to raise money to provide ultrasound machines to pregnancy centers. It's a great example of the many efforts to meet the needs of pregnant moms in need support. And we as a society can build on those efforts to offer the support that women really need, and not leave them to think abortion is the only option.
We can show true compassion to women in need, and surely when we focus on that, it will result in a ripple effect that will enhance the quality of life for people at all stages.
I truly have hope with the Dobbs vs. Jackson decision that as a country, we can set ourselves on the right track.
Indeed, June 24 was a great day in US history. It is also the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. When Mary, the Blessed Mother, greeted St. Elizabeth, St. John leaped in his mother's womb, an incredible story that testifies to the marvelous work God does in the womb while each person is in utero. In this year of 2022, June 24 was the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. God's mercy truly flowed over our country and brought a measure of healing on that day as a dark chapter in US history concluded, with Roe vs. Wade placed on the ash heap of history where it belongs. While it wasn't clear if Roe vs. Wade would get overturned, this seemingly impossible act happened. God indeed provided a miraculous answer to the many prayers that so many offered to see the end of Roe vs. Wade.
And on the approach to the Independence Day holiday, we can celebrate those inalienable rights declared powerfully in the Declaration of Independence: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Life comes first, and it brings meaning to all other rights, and this decision was an important step in the right direction to uphold the sacredness of Life.
